Fado in Lisbon, Portugal: what it is

Fado is Portugal's urban song: usually a solo singer accompanied by an acoustic guitar and the Portuguese guitar, which UNESCO describes as a pear-shaped cittern with twelve wire strings, unique to Portugal. The songs are poetry set to music, often about longing, the sea, love and the city itself.

UNESCO added fado to its list of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity in 2011. It is performed on concert stages and in small fado houses, and amateurs still sing it in associations in Lisbon's older neighbourhoods.

Lisbon fado houses: where to hear fado music

Many fado houses (casas de fado) are in Alfama and Mouraria, the old quarters below the castle, and in Bairro Alto. There are also small venues in Chiado and the Baixa, like the Chiado show above.

Fado houses are small rooms with the musicians only a few metres away. That closeness is what makes fado work, and why a short show in a small room is often better than a big dinner hall.

Fado dinner show in Lisbon or drinks only?

A fado dinner show turns fado into the whole evening: dinner is served, and the singers perform in sets between courses. It costs more (from €60 per person for the dinner in our list) and lasts about two and a half hours.

A drinks-only show lasts about 50 minutes, includes a glass of wine or port and costs from about €13–15. You can eat before or after, for example on a food tour.

Fado dinner in Lisbon: what to check first

If you walk into a fado house for dinner, ask before you sit down whether there is a set menu, a minimum spend or a show fee, so the bill holds no surprises. Booking a show in advance gives you a fixed price.

The Lisbon Fado Museum

The Museu do Fado is in Alfama at Largo do Chafariz de Dentro 1. It tells the story of fado and its singers and is a good stop before a show. It is open Tuesday to Sunday from 10 am to 6 pm (last entry 5:30 pm) and a standard ticket costs €5.

How to enjoy fado and avoid tourist traps

  1. Small room over big hall

The best fado is heard close up. Choose a small fado house or a short show over a large dinner venue with a stage far away.

  2. Know what you pay for

Short shows include a drink and have a fixed price. For dinner venues, ask about set menus, minimum spend or show fees before you sit down.

  3. Plan for the length

Short shows last about 50 minutes; a fado dinner about 2.5 hours; the fado walk about 3 hours. Pick the one that fits your evening.

  4. Keep quiet while they sing

Audiences are expected to listen in silence during a song. Chat, order and applaud between songs and sets.

  5. Visit the museum first

The Fado Museum in Alfama (€5, closed Mondays) gives you the background that makes the songs land.

  6. Mind the cancellation window

All the shows here could be cancelled free up to 24 hours before when we checked.
