Winery tours from Lisbon: where the vineyards are

The Lisboa wine region has nine denominations of origin. The three closest to the city are small and historic: Bucelas, known for fresh white wines from the Arinto grape; Colares, with Ramisco vines planted in loose sand by the sea near Sintra; and Carcavelos, a fortified wine region that city growth has left with almost no vineyards.

South of the Tagus, the Setúbal peninsula is the home of Moscatel de Setúbal, a sweet fortified wine, and of large cellars in Azeitão and Palmela.

Lisbon vineyard tour: half day or full day?

A half-day Lisbon vineyard tour means Carcavelos (90 minutes on site) or the private Setúbal trip (4 hours with pickup). A full day adds sightseeing: Sintra and Cabo da Roca with the Colares winery, or the Arrábida coast and Sesimbra with two Setúbal cellars.

If you mainly want to taste, a tasting in Lisbon is cheaper and shorter; if you want to stand in a vineyard and see where the wine is made, take a trip out.

Douro Valley wine tour from Lisbon?

Port is made in the Douro Valley in the north of Portugal, near Porto, the first demarcated and regulated wine region in the world (since 1756). It is too far for a relaxed day trip from Lisbon, which is why none of our picks goes there. Taste port in Lisbon instead, or plan a night or two in Porto.

A Lisbon food and wine tour

If you want wine with food, a Lisbon food and wine tour pairs local wine, port and ginjinha with petiscos at several stops. Our food tours guide compares them, including a seated wine tasting with a sommelier.

Before you book a wine tour

  1. Check how much you taste

The port tasting pours three styles; the Setúbal trips visit two cellars. If the number of wines matters to you, read the "includes" list on the booking page.

  2. Choose by how you get there

The Sintra winery day and the private Setúbal trip pick you up. The Arrábida day meets on Avenida da Liberdade; Carcavelos means your own trip out of the city by train or taxi.

  3. Half day or full day

Carcavelos and the private Setúbal trip fit into half a day. The Sintra and Arrábida trips take 8–9 hours and replace a day of sightseeing.

  4. Eat first

Tastings on an empty stomach go to your head fast. Most trips stop for lunch or pair the wine with food; check which.

  5. Wear flat shoes

Vineyards and cellars mean gravel, stairs and uneven floors. Comfortable clothes are fine; there is no dress code.

  6. Free cancellation

All six can be cancelled free up to 24 hours before, so you can book before you know the weather.

Questions people ask

What is the 20 minute wine rule?

A rule of thumb for serving temperature: put red wine in the fridge for about 20 minutes before serving, and take white wine out of the fridge about 20 minutes before. It keeps reds from tasting warm and whites from tasting of nothing.

What are some good day trips I can take from Lisbon?

Sintra and Cascais, Fátima with Nazaré and Óbidos, the Arrábida coast with Setúbal wineries, and even the Algarve. Our day trips guide compares them.

Does Portugal have wineries?

Many. Portugal makes wine almost everywhere, from the Douro in the north (home of port) to the Lisboa region and the Setúbal peninsula around the capital, and the Alentejo further south.

What month is best for wine tasting?

Any month works for a tasting room. For vineyards, late summer and autumn are the most interesting, when the grapes ripen and are harvested; spring is greener and quieter.

What is the 30 minute rule for wine?

Another rule of thumb: many red wines taste better if you open them and let them breathe for about 30 minutes before drinking. It is a guide, not a law.

Can you wear jeans to a wine tour?

Yes. Wine tours from Lisbon are casual. Wear comfortable shoes for vineyards and cellars, and bring a layer for cool cellars.

What are the best vineyard tours in Portugal?

The Douro Valley is the most famous wine landscape. From Lisbon, the best vineyard tours on this page are the Sintra winery day in Colares and the Arrábida and Setúbal wine day.

Where did Anthony Bourdain eat in Lisbon?

For his 2012 Lisbon episode of No Reservations, Portuguese press reported that he ate at Cervejaria Ramiro with chefs José Avillez and Henrique Sá Pessoa, at Cantinho do Avillez and Bistro 100 Maneiras, and tried grilled octopus and the bifana pork sandwich. A Lisbon food tour is a good way to taste similar food.
