Short answer Yes, you can do the Algarve as a day trip from Lisbon, but it is a 10–12-hour day with close to three hours on the road each way. Guided tours start from €89 per person and cover Benagil Cave, Carvoeiro and Lagos; the boat ride into the cave area is included on some tours and an add-on on others. If you can spare a night, the trip is much more relaxed.

What an Algarve tour from Lisbon looks like

Expect an early start, close to three hours on the motorway south, then a string of short stops along the central Algarve coast: the Benagil Cave area, the Algar Seco rocks near Carvoeiro, a beach such as Marinha, and the old town and cliffs of Lagos. You are back in Lisbon in the evening, 10–12 hours after leaving.

Benagil Cave is the draw. Some tours show it from the viewpoint on the cliff above; others include a boat ride to it. Since 2024 local rules ban landing on the beach inside the cave and swimming into it, so every visit is from a boat or from above.

Lisbon to Algarve tour or on your own?

A Lisbon to Algarve tour is the only practical way to see several places on the coast in one day: the driver handles the long road and the stops are spread out. On your own, the train is good for reaching Faro, but Benagil, Carvoeiro and Lagos are far apart and not on one line, so you would see one place, not three.

Two-day trip to the Algarve from Lisbon

If you can, make it two days. With a night in Lagos or near Carvoeiro, you swap one long drive for two shorter days, can take a boat or kayak tour to the caves in the morning light, and still have time for a beach. This is the better choice for most travellers who are not short on time.

Portugal itinerary: Lisbon and the Algarve in 7 or 10 days

A Lisbon and Algarve itinerary works well as one trip:

  • 7 days: three or four days in Lisbon with a Sintra day trip, then three nights on the Algarve coast, based in one town.
  • 10 days: four days in Lisbon with two day trips (Sintra and Fátima, Nazaré and Óbidos), then five or six days in the Algarve, moving once between the central and western coast.

The long drive, what is included, and whether one day is enough

  1. Accept the drive

Every tour here takes 10–12 hours, with close to three hours each way on the road. Bring water and something to read.

  2. Check the boat ride

Only some tours include the Benagil boat ride; on others it is an option you add when booking, or you see the cave from the cliff top.

  3. Pack for the coast

Bring swimwear, sun cream and shoes with grip: the cliff paths around Benagil and Algar Seco are uneven and steep in places.

  4. Mind the sea

Boat rides to the cave depend on the sea. In rough weather they can be cancelled on the day, so ask what happens then.

  5. Use free cancellation

All four tours offer free cancellation; on the €89 tour it runs up to 24 hours before. Check the deadline for the others when you book.

  6. Stay a night if you can

One night on the coast turns a long day in a vehicle into two good days. One day is enough for a first look, not for the beaches.

Questions people ask

Is it possible to do a day trip from Lisbon to Algarve?

Yes, on a guided tour. Expect 10–12 hours in total, with close to three hours of driving each way. The tours above cover Benagil Cave, Carvoeiro and Lagos in that time.

Is it worth going to Algarve, Portugal?

Yes, for its sea cliffs, caves and beaches, which are unlike anything near Lisbon. It is most worth it with at least a night there; as a day trip it is a long but memorable outing.

What is the best day trip from Lisbon?

For most first-time visitors, Sintra: it is close, packed with palaces and history, and easy to combine with Cascais. The Algarve is the best choice if beaches and cliffs matter more to you than palaces. See all options on our day trips page.

Is there a high speed train from Lisbon to Algarve?

There is no dedicated high-speed line. The fastest train, the Alfa Pendular, reaches Faro in about three hours from Lisbon Oriente; Intercidades trains take a little longer.

What's the best way to get from Lisbon to Algarve?

For a stay, the train to Faro or a hire car, both around three hours. For a single day that covers several places on the coast, a guided tour is easiest because the sights are spread out.

What is the most beautiful train ride in Portugal?

Many travellers name the Douro line east of Porto, which follows the river through the port wine valley. The line from Lisbon to the Algarve is comfortable but runs mostly inland, so you see little of the coast from the train.

What is a good itinerary for an Algarve trip?

Base yourself in one town, such as Lagos or Carvoeiro, for three or more nights. Spend one morning on a boat or kayak tour to Benagil, walk part of the Seven Hanging Valleys trail, and keep the rest for beaches and the old town of Lagos.

Are there direct trains from Lisbon to Algarve?

Yes, to Faro: direct trains leave from Lisbon Oriente. For Lagos there is no direct train; you change at Tunes, so the trip takes several hours.
