A Lisbon to Fátima day trip: what you see

Most tours combine four places north of Lisbon. In order of a typical day:

  • Fátima: the Sanctuary at Cova da Iria, where three shepherd children, Lúcia, Francisco and Jacinta, reported six apparitions of Our Lady between May and October 1917. Today it is a major pilgrimage site (the Shrine counted around 450,000 pilgrims at its May pilgrimage in 2024), with the small Chapel of the Apparitions and two basilicas on a huge open square.
  • Batalha: a Gothic and Manueline monastery listed by UNESCO, built to give thanks for a battle won in 1385.
  • Nazaré: a fishing town with a long beach and a clifftop quarter, the Sítio. From the lighthouse fort you look down on Praia do Norte, where the giant winter waves break.
  • Óbidos: a medieval village inside its castle walls, with whitewashed lanes and ginja cherry liqueur served in chocolate cups.

Travel times and time at each stop

Fátima is about 125 km from Lisbon and Nazaré about 120 km, each roughly an hour and a half by road; Óbidos is closer, about 85 km or an hour. Add the drives between the stops and you spend around three and a half to four hours in the vehicle on a four-stop day.

On a 10-hour tour that leaves roughly an hour to an hour and a half at each stop, including lunch. That is enough to see the sanctuary, walk the walls of Óbidos and take in the view at Nazaré, but not to go inside every museum. If one place matters most to you, choose a tour with fewer stops.

Small group or big coach?

The €31 full day is the cheapest way to see all four places and has hundreds of bookings behind its rating. The trade-off is a bigger group and a fixed timetable. Small-group tours (from €79–80) cap the group, often at 8, so the van fits into Nazaré's narrow streets and the guide has time for questions.

Private tour to Fátima from Lisbon

A private tour to Fátima from Lisbon lets you stay longer at the sanctuary, attend a mass, or skip a stop. Two of our picks can be booked privately; the price rises with the group size you choose.

Half-day trip to Fátima from Lisbon

A half-day trip to Fátima from Lisbon is possible by car, but with about three hours of driving it leaves little time at the sanctuary. None of the tours we compared offers a half day to Fátima; the only half-day option goes to Nazaré.

Óbidos or Nazaré day trip from Lisbon

If you are not interested in Fátima, a Nazaré and Óbidos day gives each place more time. A day trip from Lisbon to Óbidos alone is easy by bus or car, about an hour each way, and pairs well with a stop on the coast.

Lisbon to Nazaré day trip

For a Lisbon to Nazaré day trip, the season matters: the giant waves at Praia do Norte mostly arrive in winter, roughly October to March. In summer Nazaré is a calm beach town, still worth it for the cliff views and the fishing quarter.

Lisbon to Tomar day trip

Tomar, with the Templar Convent of Christ, is another UNESCO site north of Lisbon. None of the tours on this page goes there; ask a private tour operator if you want to add it.

How to plan a Fátima, Nazaré and Óbidos day

  1. Pick the number of stops first

Four stops in one day means about an hour at each. If you want time inside Batalha or at a mass in Fátima, choose a three-stop or private tour.

  2. Expect three to four hours of driving

Fátima and Nazaré are each about 1.5 hours from Lisbon. Bring water and a snack for the van.

  3. Check pickup or meeting point

Several tours pick you up at your hotel; the 8-person tour does not. Confirm the meeting point and time when you book.

  4. Avoid the big pilgrimage days

On the 12th and 13th of each month from May to October, the anniversaries of the apparitions, Fátima fills with pilgrims, most of all in May and October. Pick another day for a calmer sanctuary.

  5. Dress for the sanctuary and the wind

Shoulders covered in the chapels, and a jacket for the clifftop at Nazaré, which is often windy even in summer.

  6. Use free cancellation

All six tours here can be cancelled free of charge, most up to 24 hours before. Book early and cancel if the weather turns.
