Lisbon Surf Lessons: Eight Ways to Start

Wondering where to surf near Lisbon? Lisbon surf lessons mostly run at Costa da Caparica, across the Tagus, and the three we checked cost €24 to €30 for two to three hours with equipment and an instructor. The sea was forecast at 16 °C on 21 October, so a wetsuit matters.

Start with the facts you need to choose a lesson. This guide covers how to get there, what the water is like, which beach to pick, what a lesson includes, and other ways to spend a day outdoors.

Prices, times and equipment below come from GetYourGuide pages and official pages read on 21 October 2026.

Getting to the lessons from Lisbon

Most lessons are on the Costa da Caparica, on the south side of the Tagus. Carris Metropolitana lists line 3708 from Cais do Sodré, 3709 from Marquês de Pombal and 3710 from Areeiro, each ending at Costa da Caparica (Terminal). Its data for these lines showed rides of about 55 to 70 minutes on its last timetable, which ran to 30 June 2026, so check the current one.

The other way is by boat and bus. Metro de Lisboa's Cais do Sodré page lists Transtejo boats to Cacilhas. From Cacilhas, line 3022 runs to Costa da Caparica (Terminal), and line 3011 runs there too.

Carcavelos is easier, because it has a station on CP's Linha de Cascais. In the weekday timetable, in force since 6 April 2026, the first train leaves Cais do Sodré at 05:30 and reaches Carcavelos at 05:57. From 10:40 trains leave every 20 minutes, and the last one listed leaves at 01:30.

Key Takeaway The three Costa da Caparica lessons we checked cost €24 to €30 and include equipment, and the sea off the Lisbon coast was forecast at about 16 °C on 21 October 2026.

What the water is like for Lisbon surf lessons

IPMA's sea forecast for Lisboa, costa gave water of 16.0 to 16.2 °C on 21 October 2026, with waves of 1.1 to 1.8 metres. That is cold enough that you want a wetsuit, and the lesson that lists one is the first in this guide. IPMA's pages give forecasts, not seasonal averages, and its CascaisWatch page shows seasonal sea temperatures near Cascais only as a chart. We found no official page that names a surf season for Lisbon. For Ericeira, Save The Waves calls October to May the best surf season, so ask a school whether your date suits a first lesson.

The tourist board says the coasts face west and south, so you find great waves under any weather conditions. The beaches it names are Costa da Caparica, Praia de Carcavelos and Guincho. The first has 15 km of waves, and the page says people go there in summer or winter. It states no level for any beach. The lessons below tell you the level they teach.

A first surf lesson is mostly about falling off gracefully.

Which beach: Costa da Caparica, Carcavelos or Ericeira?

For a first lesson, Costa da Caparica is the simplest, because the three lessons below are there and the buses run from central Lisbon. Carcavelos suits a surfer who wants a train. Ericeira suits a day trip, or a surfer who wants a famous break.

Ericeira is Europe's first World Surfing Reserve. Save The Waves, which runs the reserve programme, says its mix of waves suits all skill levels, from beginners to professionals, with numerous surf schools. Ribeira d'Ilhas and Coxos are the iconic breaks it names. Carris Metropolitana lists lines 2740, 2741, 2751, 2801 and 2803 between Ericeira (Terminal) and Lisboa (Campo Grande). The Metro's Campo Grande station is on the Yellow and Green lines.

1. Costa da Caparica beginner lesson with board and wetsuit

The plainest first lesson is the Surf Experience at Costa da Caparica, from €30. You get a two-hour beginner course that meets at Portugal Surf School, Muralha da Praia, Apoio 8. Listed are a surfboard, a wetsuit, an instructor qualified by the Portuguese Surfing Federation and insurance. Photos and hotel pickup are not included.

The course runs in English, Portuguese and Spanish, and reviewers rate it 4.9 from 746 reviews. Children under 12 are excluded, and you bring your own towel.

2. Small-group lesson at Praia da Mata

The surf lesson at Costa de Caparica Beach costs from €24 and lasts three hours. The group is limited to six people. It meets at the car park on Estrada da Praia da Mata, and Carris Metropolitana lists a line 3044 between Costa da Caparica and Praia da Mata. Transport is not included.

Included are surf equipment, a certified instructor, a Portuguese Surfing Federation certificate, insurance and a few free photos. Its rating is 5.0 from 549 reviews. Children under 12, pregnant women and people over 104 kg are excluded.

3. Surf lesson with pickup from Lisbon

The Lisbon Surf Experience costs from €26. It lasts two to four hours, depending on the option, and offers pickup if you book it. Listed are a two-hour surf session in a group or private, complete surf equipment, a certified instructor and sports insurance. One option adds video footage.

The meeting point varies by option, so check availability before you book. A minimum number of participants is needed, and the session depends on the weather. Non-swimmers are excluded. That makes 4.9 from 1,067 reviews.

4. Carcavelos, on the Cascais line

Carcavelos is where you go if you already surf, or want a beach you reach by train. Praia de Carcavelos and Guincho are the Cascais-coast beaches the tourist board names. The CP timetable puts Carcavelos 27 minutes from Cais do Sodré on the first weekday train. We link no lesson here, because we checked none at Carcavelos.

CP's urban price sheet, in force since 1 January 2026, gives €5.10 for a Lisboa to Cascais return, and the page does not list a Carcavelos fare. Check the fare before you go.

5. Ericeira, the surf reserve north of Lisbon

Ericeira is the one to pick if you already surf or want a long day out. Save The Waves says the reserve was dedicated on 14 October 2011, and names a best surf season of October to May. We link no lesson here, because we checked none in Ericeira, and no official page gives lesson prices.

6. Kayak from Sesimbra

The kayak trip in the Arrábida Natural Park costs from €35 and lasts three to five hours. It starts at BORK Kayak and Outdoor Centre in Sesimbra, and one of the return points is Praça dos Restauradores 48 in Lisbon. The group is limited to ten people.

You get an instructor, snacks and water. The plan is a 10 minute safety briefing, a 75 minute paddle, a 30 minute break and another hour of paddling. The rating is 4.9 from 1,311 reviews. Our Arrábida kayak guide covers the season, the buses and the sea there in full.

7. Dolphin watching on the Tagus

Dolphin watching is for a day when you want the sea without a board. The dolphin watching tour with a marine biologist costs from €55. It lasts three hours and leaves from Terra Incógnita at Doca de Santo Amaro. A marine biologist, a boat tour, a life jacket and insurance are listed. Wild animals cannot be promised, so no trip can guarantee a sighting. Reviewers rate it 4.9 from 1,303 reviews.

For more boats on the river, see our Lisbon boat tours.

8. Walk the Sintra hills

Walking costs nothing on a day when the sea is flat. Parques de Sintra's hiking brochure lists the Santa Maria Trail at 1,770 m (1 hour, easy), the Lapa Trail at 1,450 m (45 minutes, moderate) and the Seteais Trail at 2,410 m (1 hour 30, challenging). It says to stay on the trails, bans bicycles on them, and warns that rocks and cliffs are unstable.

The tourist board describes the Sintra-Cascais Nature Park as 17,000 hectares between the Guincho dunes and the Sintra hills, reached by car, motorbike or bus. No routes are named, and we link no tour here because we checked none.

How to choose

If you have never surfed, choose a lesson that lists equipment and a beginner level. If you can swim and want a small group, choose the three-hour lesson with six people. If you do not want to deal with buses, choose the lesson with a pickup option.

Things to Do in Lisbon's count of GetYourGuide listings in October 2026 found 27 surf lessons and surf trips around Lisbon. They cost from €18.50 to €90 per person, and the middle price is €36.

When a lesson is the wrong choice

A lesson is the wrong choice if you already surf. You then need a board, a wetsuit and a beach, and the Carcavelos train or the Ericeira bus gets you there. A lesson also fails if you cannot swim, because one page excludes non-swimmers, or if the group includes children under 12. For them, the boat is the better pick.

Pro Tip Pack a towel and a warm layer for afterwards, because the water is about 16 °C and the beginner lesson's page asks you to bring a towel.
