Arrábida Kayak: Season, Tours and Getting There

Colourful wooden fishing boats with life rings moored in the harbour at Sesimbra, reflected in still water

Planning a paddle in the Arrábida, you want to know how far it is and what you get. Arrábida kayak trips start in Sesimbra, south of Lisbon, and cost from €35 for a three to five hour guided paddle with an instructor, snacks and water. One longer trip starts in Lisbon and includes the transport.

Start with the facts you need to pick a trip. This guide covers how the trips work, how to get there, what the sea is like, and whether to go with a guide.

Prices and details below come from GetYourGuide pages read on 21 October 2026, except where a tour's date is stated, and from the official pages linked.

Step 1: Learn how an Arrábida kayak trip works

Things to Do in Lisbon's count of GetYourGuide listings in October 2026 found 25 trips whose titles name Arrábida, Sesimbra or Setúbal. Five are kayak trips, and they cost from €35 to €75. The two below have more than 300 reviews each.

The kayak trip in the Arrábida Natural Park from Sesimbra costs from €35. BORK runs it for groups of up to ten, in English, Portuguese, Spanish or French. The page plans a 10 minute safety briefing, a 75 minute paddle, a 30 minute break at Praia do Ribeiro do Cavalo and another hour of paddling. It lists an instructor, snacks and refillable water. Its rating is 4.9 from 1,311 reviews.

The Arrábida kayak tour with lunch from Lisbon costs from €59. Rent a fun runs it for groups of up to twelve, in English and Portuguese, over eight hours. The page lists transport from Lisbon and back, a picnic lunch on the beach, a kayak, a life jacket, a snorkel mask, a sun hat and a dry bag. It names Praia dos Galapinhos. Reviewers give it 4.9 from 373 reviews.

Key Takeaway The cheapest Arrábida kayak trip starts at €35 and plans about two and a half hours of paddling, and no trip we checked lists a fitness level beyond swimming.

Step 2: Get to the start from Lisbon

For the Sesimbra paddle, the start is the BORK centre at Sesimbra harbour. Carris Metropolitana lists line 3721 from Lisboa (Sete Rios) to Sesimbra (Terminal). Check its timetable, because we quote no times. No train goes to Sesimbra. By car, the Câmara Municipal de Sesimbra gives the main route from Lisbon as the A2 to the Fogueteiro junction, then the EN 378. It states no distance or driving time, and neither do we.

Getting home is covered too. Its page lists three return points, among them Praça dos Restauradores 48 in Lisbon, and a 45 minute van ride. The Lisbon trip meets at Rua do Jardim do Tabaco 2 and includes the transport.

For Setúbal and the beaches without a car, Fertagus is the train. Its stations page lists Roma-Areeiro, Entrecampos, Sete-Rios and Setúbal on one line. Its weekday timetable shows a train leaving Roma-Areeiro at 05:53 and reaching Setúbal at 06:51, which is 58 minutes. Morning departures follow every 20 minutes. The timetable file prints no in-force date, so check it. Then you change to a bus.

If you want the beaches near Setúbal instead, the Município de Setúbal's Arrábida Sem Carros page lists the 2026 model. It ran from 4 June to 15 September, with private cars restricted from 07:00 to 20:00 on the beach access roads. It lists lines 4470 from Setúbal to Creiro, 4471 to Albarquel, 4474 to Figueirinha and 4477 as a free shuttle at Creiro. All take the Navegante pass. After 14 September the page says lines 4470 and 4471 run only at weekends and holidays, and it does not say when the restrictions end.

A kayak trip is only as good as the day you pick for it.

Step 3: Check the season and the sea

No official kayak season exists that we could find. IPMA's CascaisWatch page shows seasonal sea temperatures off Cascais only as a chart, with no numbers in the text, and we found no monthly wave figures for the Arrábida. The beach season in the Setúbal programme, 4 June to 15 September, is a rule about cars, not about paddling. Things to Do in Lisbon's count of GetYourGuide listings in October 2026 found that none of the five kayak listings names a month or season in its summary, so the tours are booked by date on their pages. Pick your day by the forecast.

The nearest official climate data is air and rain, not sea. The IPMA normals for 1991 to 2020 at Setúbal show July and August with the fewest rain days, 0.6 and 0.8 days with at least 1 mm, and the warmest afternoons, with mean maxima of 30.2 and 30.7 °C. June has 1.8 rain days and a mean maximum of 27.9 °C, and September has 3.4 and 28.1 °C. October has 8.1 rain days and 23.8 °C, and the wettest months run from October to January. These figures show when it is driest and warmest, not when the sea is best.

IPMA publishes sea forecasts for set coastal areas, and none is named Sesimbra or Arrábida. On 21 October 2026 its forecast for Lisboa, costa was 16.0 to 16.2 °C with waves of 1.1 to 1.8 metres. For Sines, costa it was 17.1 to 17.3 °C with waves of 1.2 to 1.7 metres. The park lies between the two. The Arrábida coast faces south, so use these as a guide only.

Step 4: Choose a beach and check the parking

To go to the beaches yourself, the Município de Setúbal page is the official guide. It names Albarquel and Figueirinha in the east, and Portinho da Arrábida, Creiro, Galapos and Galapinhos in the west. In the 2026 scheme, private cars were barred from 07:00 to 20:00 between Travessa da Casa da Saúde and Figueirinha. The roads to Portinho da Arrábida, Creiro and Galapos closed once parking was full.

Parking rules differ by beach. Figueirinha's larger eastern car park was free until full. Creiro's car park of about 140 spaces charged €5 for a full day and €3 from 13:00. Free alternatives were the Alegro shopping centre (line 4474), the Várzea bus terminal and the Azeitão monthly market (line 4470). After 15 September the page does not say when the restrictions end, so check before you drive.

BeachHow the 2026 page says to reach it
AlbarquelLine 4471 shuttle, every 20 to 30 minutes in season
FigueirinhaLine 4474 from Alegro, or the eastern car park until full
CreiroLine 4470 from Setúbal ITS, or the paid car park
Galapos, GalapinhosLine 4477 free shuttle from Creiro, every 30 minutes
Portinho da ArrábidaRoad access closed once parking was full

Step 5: Pack for the Arrábida kayak trip and check your fitness

Its page says the Sesimbra paddle is not suitable for non-swimmers, people over 120 kg or people with reduced mobility. The trip with lunch lists a life jacket, and tells you to bring a towel, sunscreen and swimwear. The Sesimbra page lists no towel or swimwear.

Neither page names a fitness level. The Sesimbra plan, 75 minutes of paddling, a break and another hour, is the best guide we have. Choose the eight-hour trip if you want a beach day with snorkelling. Choose the shorter one if you want the paddle without the long day.

Pro Tip Take your swimsuit under your clothes and a towel in a dry bag, because the €35 Sesimbra page lists snacks and water but no towel.

Step 6: Decide between a tour and going on your own

The verdict: for a first paddle, book the guided trip, and if you already paddle and own a kayak, ask BORK, because we found no published rental. A guide is the safer choice for a first paddle here. The park's information site, run by the CCMAR research centre with the LPN and ICNF, says the marine park sits inside the Arrábida Natural Park and the Natura 2000 network. It links an ICNF code of behaviour. The prohibited and restricted activities are set out in the park's management plan, and we could not read kayak-specific limits. We also found no official page on renting a kayak, so ask the park authority or an operator before you go alone.

The Sesimbra paddle is the cheapest way in. For the whole day with transport, the lunch trip is the other pick. If you want Arrábida without paddling, the Arrábida and Sesimbra day trip with wine costs from €72. It lasts eight hours, meets at the Hard Rock Cafe, Avenida da Liberdade 2, and includes transport, a guide and two wine tastings. Lunch is not included, and its rating is 4.8 from 430 reviews.

For more places to go, see our day trips from Lisbon. The same Sesimbra paddle is one of the options in our guide to Lisbon surf lessons.

When a kayak trip is the wrong choice

A kayak trip is the wrong choice if you cannot swim, because the Sesimbra page excludes non-swimmers. It is also the wrong choice if you want to be back in Lisbon quickly, since the shortest trip takes three hours plus the journey.

When is the best time of year for kayaking in Arrábida?

No official kayak season exists that we could find. IPMA publishes forecasts for dates, and shows seasonal sea temperatures near Cascais only as a chart. Setúbal's beach season in 2026 ran from 4 June to 15 September, and that is when car restrictions applied. What the data shows: IPMA's 1991-2020 normals for Setúbal give July and August the fewest rain days (0.6 and 0.8 days with at least 1 mm) and the warmest afternoons (mean maximum 30.2 and 30.7 °C). June and September follow, and October to March are wetter. That is air and rain, not sea, and it is not a kayak season. None of the five kayak listings names a month, so pick your day by the forecast.

IPMA's forecast for 21 October 2026 gave 16.0 to 16.2 °C for Lisboa, costa and 17.1 to 17.3 °C for Sines, costa. IPMA has no forecast area named Sesimbra or Arrábida, so the two bracket the park. Wear swimwear you can paddle in.

The pages state no fitness level, only that the Sesimbra paddle is not suitable for non-swimmers, people over 120 kg or people with reduced mobility. It plans 75 minutes of paddling, a 30 minute break and another hour. You should be able to swim and paddle for that long.

Can you kayak in Arrábida without a tour?

We found no official page on renting a kayak there. We could not read kayak-specific limits, so ask the park authority before you paddle alone.

Which Arrábida beaches can you reach, and can you park?

Setúbal's municipality names Albarquel, Figueirinha, Portinho da Arrábida, Creiro, Galapos and Galapinhos. From 4 June to 15 September 2026, private cars were barred from 07:00 to 20:00 between Saboaria and Figueirinha, and roads to Portinho, Creiro and Galapos closed once parking was full. Creiro's car park of about 140 spaces charged €5 a day, or €3 from 13:00.

Conclusion

Pick the €35 Sesimbra paddle if you can get to the harbour, or the €59 trip from Lisbon if you want the transport and a picnic included. Go with a guide, because the marine park has its own rules and we found no official page on renting a kayak there. Check the sea forecast for your day, and bring swimwear, a towel and sunscreen.
