Romantic Things to Do in Lisbon: 6 Ideas for Couples

A small white sailboat on the wide blue Tagus with the Lisbon skyline across the water

Lisbon is best for couples at the end of the day, when the light turns gold on the river. The most romantic things to do in Lisbon are a sunset sail on the Tagus, a fado dinner, a viewpoint at dusk, the ferry to Cacilhas, São Jorge Castle near closing time and a day trip to Sintra and Cascais, and the sunset hour, which moves from about 17:20 in December to about 21:05 in June, decides which one you book first.

Couples get the most out of Lisbon between late afternoon and night, so this list is ordered around the sunset. It gives the times, the prices and how to get to each stop.

Prices and times below come from each operator's own pages and from sunset calculations for central Lisbon, read on 21 October 2026. Check them for your travel date.

1. A sunset sail on the Tagus: the classic

A sail puts the whole waterfront in front of you with a drink in your hand. The sunset sailing cruise with wine is from €55 per person and lasts 2 hours. You get a welcome drink and a crew, and food is not included. It leaves from Doca de Belém, you should arrive 30 minutes before, and a private group is possible. Its listing says it is not a wine-tasting tour and not wheelchair accessible. Reviewers rate it 4.9 across 805 reviews.

The sunset cruise with drinks on a spacious yacht is from €45 and also lasts 2 hours. You join a small group with an open bar with wine, beer and soft drinks, and toilets on board. It leaves from the Oceanic Lounge at Doca de Santo Amaro. Travellers rate it 4.9 across 1,069 reviews. Both pages offer free cancellation up to 24 hours before.

The pages do not give the start time, so match the departure to the sunset hour in the table below. In December the sun sets at about 17:20, and in June it sets after 21:00.

Things to Do in Lisbon's count of GetYourGuide listings in October 2026 found 22 boat listings with sunset in the title, from €19.90 to €81, with a middle price of €35. All 22 can be cancelled for free. Some of those are party boats with a DJ, so read the page before you book a quiet evening.

The CP train from Cais do Sodré reaches Belém in 8 minutes, according to the CP timetable in effect from 5 July 2026. The operators publish no directions to either dock, so check the address on a map.

2. A fado dinner: music in a small room

Fado is Lisbon's sung music, and UNESCO says a solo singer usually sings with a guitar and the pear-shaped Portuguese guitar. It is performed in small fado houses. UNESCO lists it as intangible heritage since 2011.

The fado night with dinner is from €60 per person and lasts about 2.5 hours. The price covers a traditional dinner and a live show, and drinks are extra. You dine in a former chapel with blue-and-white tiles. Travellers rate it 4.3 across 625 reviews, which is lower than the boats above. Free cancellation applies up to 24 hours before.

You can also book a fado house directly. Parreirinha de Alfama is open Tuesday to Sunday from 20:00 to 01:00 and is closed on Mondays, with a price range of €20 to €50. Páteo de Alfama is open daily from 19:30 to 23:30, with the same range. Clube de Fado is open daily from 19:30 to 01:00 and lists a price above €50. None of the pages says what the range includes. Ask when you book.

See our fado shows in Lisbon page for more.

3. A viewpoint at dusk: the free one

Three viewpoints sit on the hill above Alfama. Turismo de Lisboa describes Santa Luzia as a viewpoint with a garden and a café, with a view of the Tagus. The Graça viewpoint is higher up and the tourist board calls its view one of the best in Lisbon. The Senhora do Monte viewpoint is described as one of the calmest places to look at the city. None of the three pages lists a fee or hours.

Carris lists Largo das Portas do Sol on tram 12E and on tram 28, and Graça on tram 28. The Senhora do Monte page names no line. Ride to Graça and go on from there.

Arrive 30 minutes before the sunset hour in the table above. Santa Luzia has a café, but no hours are published, so bring a drink.

The best seat for a Lisbon sunset is the one you reach before it starts.

4. The ferry to Cacilhas: a cheap boat ride

The Transtejo ferry crosses the Tagus from Cais do Sodré to Cacilhas in an average of 10 minutes, according to the operator's timetable page. By day the gaps between boats are about 10 to 25 minutes. The last boat from Cais do Sodré leaves at about 23:45, so you can have dinner on the far bank and come back.

The operator's fares page says the zapping fare for the route is €1.60 from 16 March 2026. It shows the single-ticket price only as an image, so we did not read it.

A ferry ride costs far less than a cruise, though it is a public ferry and not a sailing yacht. Take the ferry if you want the river view for the price of a coffee.

5. São Jorge Castle: the walls near closing time

The castle's schedule says 9:00 to 21:00 from 1 March to 31 October, with the last admission at 20:30. From 1 November it closes at 18:00, with the last admission at 17:30. The ticket page lists adults at €17. Online sales go through BOL only.

Put that beside the sunset table. In late June the sun sets at about 21:05, after the castle has closed. In December it sets at about 17:20, while the castle is open until 18:00, so you can watch from the walls. The last admission is at 17:30, so go in earlier.

Carris bus 737 runs from Praça da Figueira to the castle, so you can skip the climb. See the line page.

Pro Tip In winter, enter the castle at about 16:30 and watch the sunset from the walls. In late June, use a viewpoint instead, because the castle closes before sunset.

6. A day trip to Sintra and Cascais: a whole day together

Sintra is the fairy-tale town in the hills west of Lisbon, and Cascais is the seaside town on the coast. Our guide to train tickets from Lisbon to Sintra covers the trains, and our Sintra page lists the day tours.

Two gardens suit couples. Parques de Sintra lists the Pena Palace essential visit, with the park and terraces, at €20 for adults. The Quinta da Regaleira charges €20 for adults. Regaleira tickets are for a booked date and time, with slots every 30 minutes from 9:00 to 17:00.

Cascais is on the CP line from Cais do Sodré. The timetable in effect from 5 July 2026 shows a train at 08:20 arriving at 09:00, which is about 40 minutes. No operator page we opened confirms a public bus to Cabo da Roca, so check before you plan it on your own.

The small-group Sintra, Pena, Regaleira, Cabo da Roca and Cascais tour is from €69 per person and lasts 9 hours. The page says the group is limited to 8 people and that you travel by air-conditioned people carrier. You meet at Avenida da Liberdade 18. Entry to Pena or Regaleira is only included if you choose that option, and hotel pickup and food are not included. Travellers rate it 4.8 across 5,175 reviews, and free cancellation applies up to 24 hours before.

Book Pena for the first slot of the day if you go by train.

Where to eat a romantic dinner

No official ranking of romantic restaurants exists, and Turismo de Lisboa does not publish one. What it lists are the fado houses in entry 2, which serve dinner with music, and some terraces. The Lumi Rooftop at The Lumiares serves Portuguese food with handmade cocktails and a view over the rooftops and the Tagus. Its page lists no hours and no prices, and gives the hotel's phone number. The Hotel Mundial rooftop looks over the castle, the river and the Baixa roofs. Its page lists a phone number and an email for reservations. The Santa Catarina viewpoint is open-air, with music and drinks in the evening, and no hours are listed.

None of these pages says whether you must book, so phone or email the venue. Do that a few days ahead for a sunset table.

How to choose romantic things to do in Lisbon

Pick by the evening you have and by how much you want to spend. The table puts the ideas side by side.

Key Takeaway In late June the castle closes at 21:00, before the sunset at about 21:05. In December it closes at 18:00, after a sunset at about 17:20.

Should you book a tour or go alone? The viewpoints and the ferry cost almost nothing, and they give you the sunset and the river on your own timing. A sail adds a drink, a crew and two hours on the water, which is the thing you cannot do alone. A sail is the wrong choice if either of you dislikes boats, or if you want to choose the exact minute. The first sail's listing also warns that it is not wheelchair accessible.

Where to stay for a romantic trip

Staying close to the evening spots saves the late walk home. The Memmo Alfama is a design hotel on Travessa das Merceeiras in Alfama, close to the cathedral and the Santa Luzia viewpoint. The Lumiares is a luxury hotel with a spa on Rua do Diário de Notícias, steps from the São Pedro de Alcântara viewpoint. Booking.com shows both at 9.3 as of 21 October 2026.

Book a sunset sail or a fado dinner for two

The sunset sailing cruise with wine is from €55 and the sunset cruise with drinks on a yacht is from €45, both about 2 hours. The fado night with dinner is from €60 and lasts about 2.5 hours. All three can be cancelled for free up to 24 hours before. Prices and ratings as shown on GetYourGuide on 21 October 2026.
